As an early years teacher, I am pretty familiar with the journey school-aged children take when it comes to becoming readers. Now that I have a child of my own, I am learning the tiny little steps that come before teachers even come into the picture.
As a child I was a hesitant reader myself, so I have always been passionate about my students leaving my classroom with a love for reading. As a parent, I am equally determined to instil that love into my daughter.
I think that we have been successful so far…
This is Marlowe. She is turning two in one short week. After her nap today, I asked if she wanted to get out of bed or read some books… “BOOKS!” I gave her a stack of books from her bookshelf and told her to let me know when she was finished reading them. I attempted to go back to writing report cards but found myself to be quite distracted by her little voice in the distance. She was saying the words that she remembered, the animal names that she saw, the sounds that we make together in our favourite books and giggles, lots of giggles. About 15 minutes later (and approximately one sentence written on my report cards), I heard “MAMA!”
I went upstairs and asked, “Marlowe, are you ready to get out of bed?” In the sweetest little voice she responded, “No! New book!” Laughing, I gave her another stack. As I went to leave her to enjoy even more stories, she said with urgency “Moo, Baa La La La book!” I noticed that one of her favourites by Sandra Boynton was on the floor. I quickly added it to her stack and headed back to my report cards. I repeated this back and forth routine for about an hour before she said she was ready to leave her bed. I am not sure if it was because she was done reading or because her bookshelf was empty. Either way, I think it is safe to say that she loves books. I hope we can continue to nurture this love as she gets older and in the mean time I hope that I find some time to finish these report cards!
