Slice of Life Challenge Day 2:
Yesterday was the first day that my 3 year old daughter and I started the Slice of Life Challenge and I have been feeling very excited with how much she is loving it already. Today when I picked her up from daycare she began singing loudly in the car.
We are only one day in and she is full of enthusiasm and love for writing. When we got settled at home, I asked her if she was ready to get cozy and write and she shouted, “YES! Let me just take my shirt off!” I hope this shirtless writing routine doesn’t carry over to school! I feel like her teachers may not welcome her topless writing as much as I do!
Once her shirt was removed and she was wrapped in a blanket she got down to business writing a surprise for me. She recently learned how to make hearts, thank you Valentine’s Day! They have been appearing everywhere. She wrote her name and it was the first time she wrote the letters in her name in a line in the correct order. We have been nudging her to do that for a while now and it happened! Look at that inventive spelling for that heart label too!
As she made her surprise for me, I started writing down the ideas we voice recorded on our winter walk last week. As we strolled through the crisp winter air, we recorded things we saw and heard. I wrote our ideas on strips of paper and we moved them around until we were happy with how it sounded.
This is how it turned out:
Winter Walks
Marlowe’s mittens getting dirty
boots stomping
airplanes flying to the moon
birds are tweeting
ice crunching under my feet
snow is falling slowly
the river is swimming under the ice
birds squawking
I found it hard not to change the order or add in words and lines but I resisted the urge and she was very proud of her poem, I was too!
I so love this! You are teaching her so much and her enthusiasm is infectious! I just love her little, sweet voice, too! 🙂
I love how you respect her as a writer. It would be fun to keep track of– and it sounds like you are!– all of the ways to invite young children to be writers.
Thanks Melanie! Yes exactly, I am eager to have these memories of her writing journey!
That is the sweetest thing! I’m so glad you didn’t change anything. What a wonderful memory she will have of time spent with you this month!
Thanks! Maybe it will become a daily tradition. Who knows!
Oh my gosh, this is too adorable! I love the clip of her voice that you included! And the things that you’re teaching her about writing…simply outstanding. Kudos to you. 🙂 ~JudyK
Thanks! It has been so much fun already. I hope her enthusiasm continues!
